Nottingham Caesars 21 v 0 Merseyside Nighthawks

The Nottingham Caesars advadnced to 4-1 with an impressive win over Merseyside. The Nighthawks received the ball on the opening kickoff, and held the ball for 18 minutes on their first drive, putting the ball in the endzone twice, but seeing both called back for penalties.

The Caesars defence held firm, and the mammoth drive ended with a 4th down turnover allowing the Caesars to take over. In contrast, the Caesars moved the ball downfield in chunks, with quarterback Gary Stainton going in for the opening score on a 50 yard run to give the Caesars a 7-0 lead.

Merseyside tried to respond, but more good defence by the Caesars held them scoreless as the first half ended.

It was the Caesars turn to control the ball in the second half, with running backs Guy Kersey, and Scott Messom, and Quarterback Stainton moving the ball well.

Midway through the 4th quarter a pass by Stainton to wide receiver Steve Boseley gained significant ground and was converted by Stainton for a 14 - 0 lead.

The Merseyside offence was unable to move the ball, and the game was wrapped up late in the 4th quarter as Stainton completed another pass to Boseley who raced 35 yards for the final score of the game. The Caesars face Gateshead next week away.

Sunday 8th August

Nottingham Caesars 26 - 18 London Mets

Underdogs Nottingham Caesars moved into the semi finals with an impressive 26-18 victory over the London Mets. The Mets, who beat the Caesars earlier in the year, were stunned early on as a Dave Clamenza interception gave the Caesars a chance to open the scoring. The Mets defence held, but a fumbled punt return enabled Guy Kersey to finish off the drive with a short dive for Nottinghams opening score.

Both teams traded punts before a Jay Smith interception gave Nottingham another chance. The Caesars were unable to capitalise, the drive ending with RB Guy Kerseys fumble.

After another exchange of punts the Mets turned the ball over on downs and on the following drive caesars QB Gary Stainton scrambled home for a 45 yard TD to give Nottm a 13-0 lead.

As time ran out in the 1st half the mets got back into the game on along TD pass to put the half time score at 13-6.

Nottingham’s opening drive of the 2nd half was capped by a 25yd TD pass to Albert Thompson for a 19-6 lead. The 3rd Nottingham interception, this time by LB Paul Oliver allowed the Caesars to move downfield and get into the endzone with QB Stainton. Nolding penalties, however, ruled out the score. Stainton recovered the lost yards and Guy Kersey picked up his 2nd score of the game giving Nottm a 26-6 lead early in the 4th quarter.

The Mets responded by moving the ball easily downfield and finding an open receiver in the endzone to bring the score back to 26-12. The onside kick was unsucessful but Nottingham went 3 and out on their next drive, and the Mets came straight back with their 3rd score to put the game close at 26-18.

With under 4 mins to play, a poor Nottingham punt would have given the Mets the ball on the Caesars 30yd line, but the defence had 12 men on the field, giving Nottingham a 1st down. Needing another 1st down to run out the clock, a 25yd Gary Stainton to Ian McCartney pass on 3rd and 20 secured the victory and a place in the semi finals.

Highlights of the Caesars games can be seen on Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri on Cable 7 at approx 6.30pm.
